Tell Me About Los Guájares...

Nestled behind the Costa Tropical is the autonomous region of Los Guájares, three delightful ‘pueblo blancos’ known as Guájar Fondón, Guájar Faragüit and Guájar Alto.

The area is located in a narrow valley, formed by the river Toba, historically known as the River of Blood, the name coming from the ferocious battles fought between Moors and Christians on the banks of the river beneath Sierra de Los Guájares and Sierra de Río Verde.

The three villages of Los Guájares are surrounded by spectacular countryside, and enjoy a typically Mediterranean climate, i.e. mild in winter and hot in summer. However, due to their location, the air is less humid and much fresher than that of the coastal towns.

The property for sale is in the village of Guájar Alto, which is, as the name suggests, the highest village of the three, and is often referred to as the most attractive.

There are 3 bars in the village, 2 of which serve full lunch and dinner menus; Bar Carmen is particularly renowned both in Los Guájares and along the coast for their superb value menú del día. The village also has its own village shop as well as being regularly served by a variety of bakers, fishmongers, and fruit and vegetable sellers, who all announce their arrival by the frenetic tooting of horns. Wednesdays see the arrival of a small market, held in the main church square, where a range of household products, shoes, clothing, plants and homewares can be bought.

The local residents embrace the arrival of foreign buyers and welcome them to the heart of the village by including them in all manner of village activities and the many fiestas that take place throughout each year. The main village fiesta takes place over 5 days in August and involves much eating, drinking, dancing, children’s activities, processions, competitions and the habitual firework displays. An extremely colourful and convivial affair, the whole of the village gets involved, with many members of the extended families returning to Guájar Alto to enjoy the festivities.

Just outside the village is a local beauty spot where the sparkling water from the mountains winds its way downwards. During the summer months the locals dam the river transforming it into a natural pool for swimming. Many a long lazy day can be spent lounging along the river bank taking a refreshing dip in the crystal clear waters and watching the brightly coloured dragonflies skim delicately across the surface.

A 15 minute drive down the mountain will take you directly onto the A-44, giving easy access to both the coast and, in the opposite direction, the city of Granada, home to the magnificent Alhambra Palace and the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort.

Granada International Airport is just over an hour’s drive from Guájar Alto; Málaga Airport is approximately 1hr 40 minutes drive away.
